awm helps make the best decisions to optimize the production process and enhance workers

The intelligent integration with existing company systems has enabled a smoother flow of information, improving operational efficiency and allowing a real-time global view of human resources.

the history of De'Longhi

“Within the process of digitalization and automation of our factories, we have maintained the centrality of the person, because we firmly believe that our human resources are essential to ensure quality products at the right price.” These are the words of Rudi Sperandio, Plant Operation Director of De’Longhi, an Italian multinational in household appliances, recently named by the World Economic Forum among the top global players in terms of innovation and production efficiency.

Thanks to the results obtained from investments in Industry 4.0, the De’Longhi site in Mignagola (Treviso) has entered the “Global Lighthouse Network,” a community of the World Economic Forum that brings together production sites recognized as world leaders in the adoption and integration of cutting-edge technologies.

awm supporting the factory: people and technology together

awm has helped transform the Italian production site of De’Longhi into an innovative plant, ensuring a rapid return on investment and a significant impact in terms of quality, agility, and improvement of people’s daily work.

In fact, by working daily alongside De’Longhi managers in managing the over 1400 people at the Mignagola plant, awm helps make the best decisions to optimize the production process, enhancing and protecting workers at the same time.

awm allows us to integrate inputs from various systems, process them, and make useful information available to our department heads and team leaders, who are the end users of the platform, enabling them to make quick and informed decisions.” Explains Luca Marchezzolo, HR Manager Industrial Operations Italy of De’Longhi, “Distributing information throughout the organization has allowed us to stimulate the birth of new ideas and increase cross-functional collaboration, consequently increasing people’s engagement.”

A workforce management digitalization project started at the end of 2019, which puts people at the center and, through technology, transforms the factory into a single integrated ecosystem. An ecosystem that feeds, to grow, on data. Clean, updated, and shared data. And it is precisely thanks to the availability of updated data, collected in a single tool and distributed throughout the organization, that De’Longhi ensures the enhancement and protection of every worker.

For example, managers are able to plan the personnel of production departments easily, assigning each individual the workstation best suited to their skills, developing them when necessary, and taking into account any medical prescriptions. All this through a single dashboard updated in real-time and available in a shared manner throughout the organization.

This aspect becomes fundamental, explains Roberto Buosi, Assembly Department Manager, especially in the case of unexpected absences: “With about nine hundred people operating on two or three shifts, it is physiological that someone may have an unforeseen event. Reacting quickly to these events and anticipating the identification of a solution before a slowdown in production due to the absence of the planned person has allowed us to recover further efficiency and competitive advantage.”

an integrated ecosystem that puts people at the center

After speeding up and optimizing line personnel planning and managing a substantial amount of data, De’Longhi has chosen to focus on the next step: further improving dialogue with people through the support of technology. It has decided to do so through an application, similar to the most common instant messaging apps, but developed specifically for the factory and its needs.

“We are implementing an extension of the awm platform called Azzurra. It is an app that allows direct and immediate communication with people. This means that it will not only be the company distributing notices to staff more effectively, but the goal is to create a feedback communication channel that allows the entire organization to easily exchange information and feedback,” explains Marchezzolo.

In addition to the possibility of being involved in the company’s improvement process through communication, awm gives people the opportunity to focus on higher value-added activities. For example, as Rudi Sperandio, Plant Operation Director of De’Longhi explains, “the software has radically changed the way our team leaders work, who, relieved from low-value-added activities, have been able to dedicate more time to continuous improvement activities.”

We are experiencing a paradigm shift within the factory where people are not a separate part from machines and processes, but the core of a single integrated ecosystem, based on data. This means that people must be put at the center and must be enabled by intelligent and connected work tools. Every action, every choice, every mistake must produce an additional bit of knowledge that can then be assetized and shared. The ecosystem is in fact a collective intelligence, and in the same way, the factory ecosystem must evolve in this direction.

With the help of awm, we have managed to handle our specialized workforce by increasing productivity, maintaining high quality standards, and at the same time ensuring excellent working conditions.” Says Sperandio, “All this has allowed us to respond quickly to market demands in a difficult and unpredictable context and has prepared us to face new future challenges.”
